During my last semester at UMD, I took a course called Innovation in the Public Sector where we learned about different ways that the public sector can make positive social change through small and large scale innovative projects in areas such as housing, safety, education, etc. For this class, we had a semester long group project where we each focused in on one area of the public sector. My group (Jordyn Battle, George Ericsson, and McKenzie Horton) was assigned housing. This project was a really great opportunity for me to learn more about what goes into making housing policy changes. We knew that we really wanted to focus on mitigating housing disparities for marginalized communities, such as the displaced African American community in the Lakeland area of the City of College Park. However, through hearing from guest speakers, doing research, and interviewing with potential stakeholders, we learned that our idea was a bit too broad and quite hard to achieve because it is such a large scale issue. We were able to hone in on one specific idea in order to improve housing in the Greater College Park area. As our final product, we created a slideshow presentation on our theoretical recommendations for the City of College Park in order to improve housing opportunities.
